- Welcome
- Megan G welcomes group
- Approve Minutes
- Approve Minutes Motion Jennie Stratton Second-Megan Ord
- Move Chrome Book Discussion up on the agenda to be respectful of the guests in the room
- Principal Hansen was asked by the board to have the SCC discuss this issue and make suggestions
- Education technology in CSD, question on table is do we have recommendations for Chromebooks
- SCC reviewed the different options for parents to consider that the district put out
- Willow Springs stats compared to other schools-time on Chromebook (login time-does not include non usage time (12 parents requesting more restrictions on current Chromebook)
- Principal Hansen said she is publishing more about the tools parents have access to based on SCC recommendations
- Scott McCombs explained BARK, it can be a filter (weaker at filtering) but is good at content keeping
- Jennie Stratton asked how it identifies pictures, Scott explained that it is for looking at content (inappropriate pictures). We are going to do a request for a proposal to look at other options for filters
- Principal Hansen mentioned we all want to keep kids safe, we are a hands on school that’s why art is so important here at Willow Springs
- Shalisse/Jessica- Lan School; there’s a loophole. Jackson (CSD Board Member) mentioned in board meeting: EyeBoss
- Scott McCombs explained software and filtering, malware etc. firewall, content keeper (reviews all sites, filter for devices) All district issued Chromebook are filtered by district. They can only filter than content keeper LAN SCHOOL AIR-allows a teacher to block sites, can allow certain sites at a time-force all to a site, turn off all Chromebook, (if a student has multi tabs, it will only monitor the open tab. The teacher will see if the student moves from what they are supposed to be doing to a different tab)
- Scott recommends teacher put up on display the Lan School air on white board
- Shalisse brought up concerns with that-privacy or showing something in app if a student gets on that
- Last level is the Responsible USE GUIDELINES
- Amberly Jeppson- asked about paying for everything. Is the district purchasing BARK? Is it a yearly charge? (Scott-yes subscription, hardware and software component)
- Scott, they are looking at software, they can try them. They can end a contract and start a new one with a new company. They can evaluate diff ones and see how they are. They aren’t looking for the cheapest option; looking at functionality, price etc. they don’t just go with the cheapest option
- Principal Hansen reviewed immediate actions-how are we teaching students about responsible use? We are a school, we teach. Filtering system used by CSD is designed to do certain things
- Scott said if it is a district issued device then it is monitored, if it’s a personal-owned device that is logged in with their login it won’t be filtered, the district can monitor that
- Megan O- if students download something at home and download it on their drive, how soon can it be caught, can be 40 hrs. (Scott- to traverse the network it took 40 hours. The time is because of quantity there is so much in the system)
- Holly Neibaur asked about incident at other school- Scott believed student logged in on personal device
- There is a danger with kids logging into their login at home, we need to be aware of. Can we lock student accounts at home, where are the holes? Any students logging in at home, it will be on a personal device. Are we having parents opt in to be logged in at home?
- Prin Hansen continues reviewing filtering system and options for us to choose from: 4 options.
- All input is welcomed and considered.
- Shalisse felt that the district survey did not explain the reasons why this is an issue. She believes parents aren’t getting all the facts, glossed over the facts.
- Jessica feels the same way and has been fighting this for 3 years. She would like to have an allowed list only and timed amount for certain grades
- Principal Hansen went over what we have to submit and the form we have to submit.
- Megan G stated we should send a form like this to parents, and they can give feedback.
- Principal Hansen can we give community access to this form and access to the info Scott gave us today
- Megan G mentioned we can have discussion, we need to submit a vote to the district and we can have additional conversation as needed. She wants all council members to state how they are voting and why.
- Jennie S asked about limiting google login at home, can my child login at home on Clever.com. Clever is separate, login at clever.com not through canvas
- Scott said we would lock all accounts at 3:45 if we make this decision.
- Principal Hansen -is there an opt out for that?
- Scott, we haven’t built the system, so we could do that
- Shalisse-5th graders had to login to do an assignment. She asked for paper; the teacher reluctantly did it
- Annie Nixon-son was sick, she was able to help her son log in at home and help him finish his essay and work
- Jessica feels she is on the opposite side. She wants to do just paper and pen but getting a lot of slack. My kid shouldn’t have to do all the assignments on Chromebook. Her kids need options to not have screens as part of education. She feels the research shows that children shouldn’t be on Chromebook. Not just for pornography but also to eliminate screen time. She shared her children’s experience and the negative effects of the time on screens
- Jennie S asked Jessica; is your concern that their neighbor is on it?
- Jessica feels that it is way too much resistance for her to put her kids on Chromebook restrictions
- Shalisse doesn’t feel that the district has represented the full situation to the community and parents
- Holly- including all this feedback is important, teachers do find this difficult. One option the district is looking at is starting Chromebook at a later grade
- Annie thinks the survey needs more clarification for parents to understand
- Jessica wants a materials choice class. Can we provide a class that doesn’t have 1 to 1 device with just a computer class as a brain booster?
- Annie expressed concern that the highly restricted option might hurt kids that are learning English as a 2nd language. Even having parents register can be hard. Shalisse stated that anything needed for registration should be on a white list
- Mrs. White- worries if kids can’t research at home
- Jessica tried to have the highest restriction set but it doesn’t actually restrict
- Principal Hansen said this is a multifaceted issue
- Shalisse believes that the district will delve into this further and form a committee
- Holly informed us that the board is not putting together the committee, the superintendent is putting together the committee but no board members will be allowed on it, only parents appointed
- Shalisse was disappointed they aren’t putting board members on the committee
- Holly-we always have committees with 3 board members on it. There were no board members on the THRIVE curriculum committee, the rest of the board was okay with not having board members on it. You can write letters to board members if concerned
- SCC doesn’t feel the survey captures the magnitude of issues involved.
- Motion to extend time 15 minutes- Jessica, second- Megan Ord
- Jennie S asked if google docs can be moved to a diff restriction level
- Jessica is concerned that students can create Gmail accounts for games etc. SCOTT agreed they shouldn’t be able to create accounts and email accounts
- Scott excused himself
- Vote-
- 8 votes for option 3; 2 voters abstaining
- Jessica said we shouldn’t have to go to all administrators to get a child on technology restriction
- SCC voted to block restrictions during certain hours.
- LAND Trust plans reviewed by School Performance, any necessary changes conveyed to SCC and then submitted to Board of Education
- Principal Hansen will link plan to notes that we signed
- Begin discussions on who is planning on returning next fall and open positions
- Megan- Megan G and Sarajane will be gone. 6 from parents, 4 from staff. 2 open spots; Secretary and Chair
- Review current year’s LAND Trust plan, data, expenditures, and review if spending is on course or if amendments are necessary
- Principal Hansen needs to spend more money before the next meeting. She is going to be buying software licenses.
- Is a meeting in May necessary
- Jessica mentioned we can meet if we need to discuss anything from the district.
- Adjourn Meeting
